Fotona scar treatment is a non-invasive laser therapy designed to reduce the appearance of scars, including acne scars, surgical scars, and traumatic scars, by promoting collagen remodeling and skin rejuvenation. The treatment uses laser energy to penetrate the skin layers, stimulating collagen production and remodeling scar tissue. This helps to improve the texture, color, and overall appearance of scars.
Fotona Scar Treatment can be used for various types of scars, including acne scars, surgical scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks.
The number of sessions depends on the type and severity of the scars. Typically, a series of 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart are recommended for optimal results.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure, often described as a mild stinging sensation. Any discomfort is usually brief and well-tolerated. Depending on the type of scar and location, a topical numbing cream may be applied to maximize comfort.
Side effects are minimal and may include temporary redness, swelling, or mild irritation in the treated area. You may experience temporary darkening of the skin, pinpoint bleeding, scabbing, or peeling for several days depending on the type of scar being treated.

Yes, Fotona Scar Treatment can be combined with other aesthetic treatments, such as microneedling or chemical peels, to enhance overall results. For certain scars, such as keloids, combination therapy with intralesional steroids or silicone patches can enhance overall results and maintain the effects.
What to expect – Acne scar/Keloids
- Cold sores: For acne treatment, if you have a history of oral cold sores (herpes simplex virus), it is recommended you take an oral antiviral agent starting immediately after treatment for a total of 4 days. Please contact your practitioner for a prescription if needed.
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, and sunburns for at least two weeks before your treatment. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily.
- Skin Care Products: Discontinue use of retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and other exfoliating agents for at least one week before your treatment, or as advised by your provider.
- Acne: For acnes scars, best results are achieved when active acne is under control. Be sure to work with your practitioner for a personalized plan to help achieve remission before pursuing acne scar treatment
- Accutane (isotretinoin): Discontinue use of Accutane (isotretinoin) for at least six months before considering laser treatment, as it can increase skin sensitivity.
- Comfort Measures: You will be provided with protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser light. Depending on the specific procedure, a topical anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort.
- Preparation: Your skin will be cleansed thoroughly before the treatment begins.
- Duration: Each session typically lasts between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size and severity of the treated area.
- Immediate Aftercare: You may experience mild redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, or tenderness in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. You may apply a soothing moisturizer or aloe vera gel if needed.
- Sun Protection: Continue to avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum, physical sunscreen with titanium or zinc oxide with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin as it heals for at least 7-14 days. Wear a wide-brimmed hat whenever outside and exposed to sun.
- Healing Process: You may experience mild scabbing, peeling or flaking as your skin regenerates for 7-14 days, which is normal.
- Gentle Skin Care: Avoid hot showers, saunas, and strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours post-treatment to prevent irritation. Use gentle skincare products and avoid exfoliants and retinoids for a few days.
